Malaysia’s Q3 Advance GDP Estimate Shows 5.3% Growth
Malaysia’s economy is estimated to have expanded 5.3% year on year in the third quarter of 2026, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia’s advance estimate released on 16 October. The reading is slower than the 6.0% growth recorded in the preceding quarter, while the economy’s value at constant 2015 prices was estimated at RM466.4 billion.
The result offers an early, rather than final, view of July to September activity. DOSM says its advance estimate uses available data from the first two months of the quarter and estimates for information not yet available. The department is scheduled to publish the actual third-quarter GDP data on 18 November.
Growth remains broad, but the pace has eased
DOSM said all major economic sectors contributed positively except mining and quarrying, which contracted. Services, manufacturing and construction supported the expansion, while agriculture returned to growth after a decline in the second quarter.
Services, the largest part of the economy, grew 5.4% year on year, according to the advance release. Wholesale and retail trade, information and communication, and finance and insurance were among the supporting activities. This makes the estimate relevant for businesses exposed to household spending, digital services and financial intermediation, not only exporters.
Mining remains the notable weak point
The sector split matters because a 5.3% headline can conceal sharply different conditions across industries. DOSM reported that mining and quarrying contracted, while the rebound in agriculture was supported by oil palm and livestock. The final release may refine these early estimates as more complete quarterly information becomes available.
For manufacturers and suppliers, the current read points to continued activity in the wider economy but a slower annual growth rate than in the second quarter. It should not be treated as a full forecast for the year or as proof that every demand segment is strengthening at the same speed.
Three-quarter growth is ahead of last year
Across the first three quarters of 2026, Malaysia’s economy grew 5.5%, compared with 4.8% in the corresponding period of 2025, DOSM said. That comparison puts the latest moderation in context: growth has cooled from the prior quarter, but the cumulative pace remains higher than a year earlier.
The government’s latest full-year growth projection is 4.8% to 5.3%, according to reporting on the policy update. The 18 November GDP release will be the next important checkpoint, providing the complete sector and expenditure details that businesses, investors and policymakers need to assess the durability of the expansion.
