Vietnam’s VinFast to promote electric vehicles to Indonesia’s GoJek

VinFast, a Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, and Green and Smart Mobility (GSM), an electric taxi operator, have forged an agreement with Indonesia’s GoTo to promote EV adoption among Gojek’s driver-partners. This partnership was unveiled during a business dialogue chaired by Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo. President Jokowi was on a state visit to Vietnam.

The main objective of this agreement, as stated by VinFast, is to supply electric four-wheelers of Vietnamese origin to Gojek’s driver-partners. Gojek is one of Indonesia’s largest mobility and on-demand platform providers. This move allows Gojek to explore the integration of electric cars into the transportation network of Southeast Asia’s largest economy. Gojek follows in the footsteps of its competitor, Grab, which has been deploying electric four-wheeler fleets in Indonesia since 2019.

Indonesia’s GoTo currently operates electric motorbikes

Gojek and Tokopedia merged in 2021 to form GoTo. Currently, GoTo operates approximately 500 electric motorbikes in the Indonesian archipelago. Moreover, it has plans to transition its entire fleet to electric vehicles by 2030. GoTo will transition via strategic collaborations with automakers and leasing arrangements.

Furthermore, Green and Smart Mobility (GSM), primarily owned by VinFast founder Pham Nhat Vuong, has expressed intentions to invest a substantial sum, up to $900 million, in Indonesia. However, the statement did not provide specific details regarding the nature and scope of these investments.

VinFast was in the news last year for its strong performance during its debut in the NASDAQ. VinFast is currently valued at USD 85 billion.

In summary, the collaboration between VinFast, GSM, and GoTo is a significant step. It aims to expand electric vehicle presence in Indonesia’s transportation landscape. The partnership aligns with the global trend of EV adoption as the world moves towards sustainable transportation. It underscores the commitment of all parties to a greener and more environmentally friendly future in mobility.
