Vietnam and Philippines Forge Strategic Rice Alliance
The agriculture ministers of Vietnam and the Philippines have solidified a groundbreaking rice industry alliance, aiming to upgrade their trade relationship into a robust investment partnership. This move seeks to enhance both countries’ rice industries and secure their positions in the global market.
During a recent meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam’s Agriculture Minister Lê Minh Hoan emphasized the significance of the Philippines as Vietnam’s largest rice export market. The Philippines accounts for 35-40% of its total rice exports. In the first half of this year alone, Vietnam exported 4.68 million tons, valued at $2.98 billion. This amount is a substantial increase from the previous year.
Hoan highlighted Vietnam’s efforts to improve rice quality, reduce production costs, and adapt to climate change. These efforts aim to ensure national food security, expand export markets, and build sustainable rice brands internationally. The alliance with the Philippines represents a strategic step in Vietnam’s sustainable agriculture and rural development plan. The plan targets a green, low-emission agriculture value chain by 2030 with a vision to 2045.
Philippines Agriculture Secretary praises Vietnam rice production in Alliance meeting
Philippine Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. acknowledged the critical role of Vietnamese rice in meeting the Philippines’ growing demand. In the first half of this year, the Philippines imported 2.17 million tons of rice. 1.59 million tons was sourced from Vietnam. Laurel emphasized the need for a rice industry alliance to address the Philippines’ agricultural challenges. These challenges such as low productivity and scattered production threaten Philippines food security.
Laurel proposed importing machinery and technologies from Vietnam to enhance rice cultivation in the Philippines, starting with fertilizers. He also expressed interest in Vietnamese companies investing in the Philippines, a sentiment echoed during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s state visit to Hanoi in January, where agreements on trade and agricultural cooperation were signed.
The alliance aims to transcend mere trade and foster deeper investment ties. Vietnam will provide the Philippines with appropriate technologies to optimize its production chain, moving beyond exporting milled rice. Hoan also urged for greater cooperation in the fishery sector, further strengthening the bilateral relationship.
This partnership not only addresses immediate agricultural needs but also sets the stage for long-term economic collaboration. Subsequently, it will bolster both nations’ food security and economic stability. As the Philippines lowers its rice tariff to manage inflation, this alliance becomes even more crucial in stabilizing the region’s supply and prices.
The Vietnam-Philippines rice alliance marks a significant step in Southeast Asia’s agricultural landscape, promising mutual benefits and enhanced food security amidst global economic shifts.
