Cambodia EV Electric Vehicle Policy

Cambodia Targets 800,000 Electric Vehicles (EV) by 2030

The Cambodian government has set an ambitious goal to have 800,000 electric vehicles (EVs) on the roads by 2030. The Cambodian government unveiled this initiative under the National Policy on the Development of Electric Vehicles 2024-2030. This initiative aligns with regional and global trends toward a greener industry. The policy aims to enhance the environment, economy, energy security, and access to new technologies.

The policy’s primary objective is to develop Cambodia’s EV sector and promote the use of electric vehicles. EVs are widely known to be significantly more efficient than petrol engines. According to the policy, EVs convert energy into motion five to six times more efficiently, resulting in lower mobility costs. Phan Rim, spokesman at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, highlighted the policy’s role in promoting EV development in Cambodia. Rim emphasized the economic advantages, noting that the EV industry presents new opportunities for growth and investment.

As of June 2024, Cambodia had registered 1,614 EVs, with BYD, Toyota, and Tesla being the most popular brands. Additionally, the Kingdom has registered 914 electric scooters and 440 three-wheeler electric vehicles. This growing trend reflects the public’s optimism and increasing interest in EVs. Low daily costs, comfort, and reduced pollution drive are some of the benefits

Growing demand for EV in Cambodia

The Royal Government of Cambodia is working through the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and other relevant ministries to improve the infrastructure. This is in response to the rising demand for electric vehicles in the Kingdom. Currently, there are 18 charging stations across the country, with plans to expand this network further. Udom Pisey, EV Manager of Car4You, a local auto firm, noted the significant increase in electric vehicle usage due to their cost-saving benefits and lower emissions.

The policy is also expected to foster the development of a domestic EV ecosystem. Thus, creating jobs in manufacturing, sales, and maintenance. Lim Heng, Vice President of the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce, pointed out that the policy would attract investment in EV manufacturing. This in turn aligns Cambodia with the global green industry trend. Notably, BYD has expressed interest in establishing an electric vehicle assembly plant in Cambodia. Thus, signaling a bright future for the Kingdom’s EV industry.

With these strategic moves, Cambodia is not just embracing the future of transportation but also ensuring sustainable economic growth and environmental protection.
