RM1.4 Billion Solar Energy Park project to set Johor as Malaysia’s largest solar producer
Johor is set to become a significant producer of eco-friendly energy in Southeast Asia by opening a solar power park project in Pengerang, Kota Tinggi, worth RM1.4 billion.
Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar announced this news via his official Facebook page Sunday (Feb 28). He highlighted that the project would be the biggest of its kind South-East Asia. The project will have a combined installed capacity of 450 megawatts.
Sultan Ibrahim is naming the project the Sultan Ibrahim Solar Park. He added the solar park would have a healthy economic spillover effect for the people in job opportunities at various levels.
“With this exciting project, Johor will make a quantum leap into the world of renewable and sustainable clean energy.
“This project will also mark the state’s first significant foray into large-scale sustainable energy to foster green economies and a cleaner environment.
“Johor is one of the states blessed with high sun hours. It is time that we (the people of Johor) tap into this resource to boost our power generating capacity. Above all, it is time to contribute to the production of renewable energy, ” he said.
Johor Solar Project to benefit people
According to the Facebook post, the project is the state’s first major private investment project for 2021. The post also mentioned that this investment results from the Ruler’s continued efforts to woo investors. In conclusion, it is also to spur Johor’s economic growth for the benefit of the people.
Sultan Ibrahim will officiate the ground-breaking ceremony at the project site in Pengerang on March 23.
The project is also in line with the 2030 Johor Sustainable Development Plan (2030 JSDP). The plan places significant emphasis on environmental preservation and protection as part of the state’s economic development plan for a more prosperous society.
Malaysia’s PM Muhyiddin Yassin launched the 2030 JSDP in December 2020. Above all, the goal of the plan is more economical and sustainable growth for the state.
PM Muhyiddin also happens to be the MP for Pagoh electoral district in Johor.
