TikTok Revamps Indonesian E-Commerce Shop via GoTo
TikTok, the popular social media app, has sealed a dynamic partnership with Indonesian tech behemoth GoTo to relaunch its e-commerce venture in the country, injecting a substantial $1.5 billion into Indonesia’s leading online marketplace, Tokopedia.
TikTok Shop halted operations temporarily in Indonesia in October when the government banned it. The e-commerce giant decided to align with Southeast Asia’s shifting compliance landscape. With approximately 125 million users in Indonesia, TikTok is keen on reigniting its e-commerce flame.
In a strategic move, TikTok will acquire just over 75% of Tokopedia, seamlessly integrating TikTok Shop’s Indonesian operations. Subsequently, both companies have pledged to initiate a pilot phase in consultation with regulators to ensure a smooth transition.
The joint statement from GoTo and TikTok emphasizes a commitment to showcasing Indonesian products on their platforms. It will also foster small and medium-sized businesses by aiding in production and sales strategy development.
TikTok aims full compliance to Indonesia E-Commerce Industry
This collaborative effort comes in response to the Indonesian government’s prohibition of social media-based online shopping. The aim of the Indonesian government is to safeguard smaller merchants and user data. Furthermore, Indonesia’s sizable population, exceeding 270 million, constitutes a vital market for TikTok.
The government’s online shopping ban was announced after President Joko Widodo’s cautionary words in September. The ban seeks to strike a balance between fostering e-commerce growth and implementing necessary regulations to avoid potential pitfalls.
Indonesia’s e-commerce sector has experienced exponential growth, with projected sales reaching 689 trillion Indonesian rupiah ($44 billion) by next year, marking a more than six-fold increase since 2018, according to the country’s central bank.
TikTok Shop, in operation for two years, faced setbacks not only in Indonesia but also globally, confronting scrutiny in the US, European Union, and the UK. The UK Parliament, citing security concerns, has even banned the app from its network.
As TikTok navigates regulatory challenges worldwide, its renewed focus on the Indonesian market signifies a strategic move to reclaim its standing in the global e-commerce landscape.
